Things to do in Canberra
There is much to enjoy when you visit Australia's capital city.
Canberra is a vibrant city in a beautiful park, carefully landscaped and designed to transform with the four distinct seasons. The national museums, galleries and institutions in Canberra reflect the essence of Australia’s culture, history and way of life. Proud sporting achievements are celebrated at the Australian Institute of Sport, and our unique political history is explored at Parliament House, and its predecessor Old Parliament House. A visit to the Australian War Memorial can be a sobering reminder of our nation's contribution to peace and freedom around the world.
At the Canberra Museum and Gallery you can experience Canberra’s rich and diverse social history and visual arts. You can see our country through the eyes of our artists at the National Gallery of Australia, and experience Australian character through sound and film, books and exhibitions at the National Library of Australia, the National Archives and the National Sound and Film Archive.
If you prefer more leisurely pursuits, and care
to stay on for the weekend, you might like to visit one (or several) of
the 40 vineyards in peaceful rural countryside around Canberra - most
only 30 minutes from the city. The wineries are small and friendly, and
you may even get to meet the winemaker at the cellar door.
